Setting a water softener

To regenerate the full capacity of a water softener, it takes 15 pounds of salt per cubic foot. It is more efficient to regenerate 67 percent of the capacity with a setting of 6 pounds of salt per cubic foot or 75 percent with a setting of 9 pounds per cubic foot. As a rule of thumb, you should use one pound of salt per month per person per grain of hardness.
